The Fermi's Paradox:

Yousra En Najimi

Have you ever questioned yourself about the mysterious beginning of the universe? Its age? What could be the ultimate reason behind the distribution of civilizations taking into account their exploits?

Sure you did! Sir Fermi did too! “Are we alone ?” , “Are there any twins of planet earth where life does exist with all of its earth aspects and elements ?”.Clueless.But why so skeptical? Fasten your seatbelts! We are time-traveling backward...

The Universe’s age was estimated to be 14 billion years (13,8), but Mother Earth is 4,54 billion years. Interesting, isn’t it? Let’s take a glimpse at how huge could be Universe! According to the updated statistics by NASA, only the Milky Way consists of two trillion galaxies.

The intriguing question here is the following: in that huge amount of time and immense colossal space, can the extraterrestrial intelligence be that rare or even non-existent – knowing that it had sufficient time to ever think about reaching us or going beyond it: COLONIZING THE WORLD IN SOME MILLION YEARS! ( if *Kardashev scale* is workable).

*Kardashev scale* is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use. The measure was proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964. The scale has three designated categories:

  • A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization, can use and store all of the energy available on its planet.

  • A Type II civilization, also called a stellar civilization, can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system.

  • A Type III civilization, also called a galactic civilization, can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy.

Equation of Drake came up with the solution, in an attempt to find a systematic means to evaluate the numerous probabilities involved in the existence of Alien life. It’s presented as follows:

  • R* = The rate of formation of stars that are suitable for the development of intelligent life.

  • fp = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems.

  • ne = The number of planets per solar system that have an environment suitable for life.

  • fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears.

  • fi = The fraction of life-bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.

  • fc = The fraction of intelligent civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.

  • L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

Scientists have a good handle on the first two variables, R* and fp, and are increasingly certain about the third, ne.

This equation is always equal to a number referring to the existence of certain previous civilizations, even in pessimistic scenarios.

Thus, scientists created an observatory to detect other signals, but vainly. Calculations say Aliens do exist, the reality on the other hand negates. This is known as The Paradox Of Fermi, named after the famous physicist Enrico Fermi”. The solutions to the paradox are incredibly braincracking!

Stay tuned for part 2!
